A decade has passed since The Tragically Hip’s final performance in Kingston, Ontario, but Paul Langlois admits he still hasn’t fully processed the experience. The guitarist reflected on the milestone in an interview with CBC’s Eli Glasner, aired on “The National” Thursday night, expressing gratitude for the band’s impact on people.
The emotional last concert, where lead singer Gord Downie bid farewell to fans in Kingston’s Rogers K-Rock Centre, remains etched in many memories. Downie, who had been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in December 2015 and passed away a year later at 53, delivered poignant renditions of hits like “Ahead by a Century” and “Bobcaygeon” to a captivated audience.
After releasing 13 studio albums since their inception in 1984, The Tragically Hip concluded their touring career in 2016 with a final show in their hometown on August 20. To mark the 10th anniversary, CBC will rebroadcast the band’s farewell concert in “The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration.”
Reflecting on the significance of the event, guitarist Rob Baker shared his sentiments, emphasizing that it’s more about remembrance than celebration for him. Langlois recounted his initial unease before the performance, highlighting a shift in mood when Downie’s optimism infused the moment.
Despite initial concerns about Downie’s health affecting his performance, the band members were impressed by his physical improvement during the tour. Looking back, Langlois expressed surprise at the widespread impact of their final show, realizing the magnitude only in the days following the concert.
While dispelling any hopes of a reunion, the band recently released a new album titled “Live July 22 – August 20, 2016,” featuring recordings from the 2016 tour. Baker emphasized the healing power of music, recalling a personal moment of emotional release tied to the band’s journey and the role of music in processing grief.
