The Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, Calif., showcased contrasting outcomes for Canadian swimmers Taylor Ruck and Summer McIntosh on Friday night.
Ruck secured a silver medal in the women’s 100m butterfly event and later claimed bronze as part of the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team, marking her fourth and fifth medals of the competition. The 26-year-old from Kelowna, B.C., touched the wall in a personal-best time of 56.71 seconds in the 100m butterfly, finishing behind American Gretchen Walsh, who won in 55.15 seconds. Australian Alexandria Perkins took the bronze with a time of 56.75 seconds.
Ruck expressed her satisfaction with her performance, stating, “This one [the women’s 100m butterfly] was a lot of fun.” She emphasized the importance of rest and relaxation in her success.
In contrast, McIntosh, a 19-year-old from Toronto, expressed disappointment after winning the B final of the women’s 400m freestyle event. The world-record holder failed to qualify for the A final due to a misjudgment in the morning heats. McIntosh took full responsibility for the error and vowed to learn from the experience.
McIntosh rebounded with a second-place finish in the women’s 200m freestyle and a gold in the 400m individual medley. However, she continues to reflect on her performance and aims to improve in future competitions.
On the men’s side, Canadians Blake Tierney and Ethan Ekk secured silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 200m backstroke. Tierney expressed pride in both athletes’ podium finishes and credited their hard work in training.
Ruck also contributed to Canada’s success by guiding the women’s team to a bronze medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay event. The U.S. claimed gold in the event, with Canada settling for third place. Meanwhile, the Canadian men’s 4x100m freestyle team narrowly missed a podium spot, finishing in fourth place.
