One Sunday after a church service, a fellow parishioner described Lily’s resemblance to her grandmother Debbie, a gentle lady with a warm personality. This observation wasn’t new; Lily and Debbie shared similar features like light wavy hair and radiant smiles that brightened any room. Despite not being biologically related, their bond was evident, highlighting the unique connection grandchildren often have with their grandparents.

Debbie, referred to as Nana by Lily, became a significant presence in their lives after Julie and her husband relocated to Ottawa for her job in the federal public service. Lily, born in June 2017 after a long wait due to miscarriages, brought immense joy until the devastating diagnosis of a brain tumor at four months old. The journey through treatment was arduous, with Debbie’s unexpected support playing a vital role in Lily’s life.

As Debbie, who was nearing retirement without grandchildren of her own, stepped in to assist, the absence of immediate family support became glaring. Debbie’s involvement evolved from a neighborly gesture to a cherished grandparent-like role for Lily, providing comfort and care during hospital visits and medical challenges.

Lily’s health struggles, including a stroke, vision loss, and seizures, led to a life-changing surgery called a hemispherectomy, enabling her to lead a fulfilling life despite ongoing medical needs. Nana Debbie’s unwavering dedication and support, complemented by government funding for caregiving respite, have been invaluable in alleviating the strain on Lily’s parents.

The journey of caregiving, filled with emotional turmoil and challenges, was lightened by Debbie’s constant presence and the arrival of a second child, Grace, who brought renewed joy to the family. Lily’s development into a caring older sister and the deep bond shared with Nana Debbie have been sources of healing and strength, revealing the beauty found amidst adversity.
