Richard Tice is currently under scrutiny by the standards commissioner for an alleged failure to disclose a potential conflict of interest. This investigation comes as Nigel Farage, his superior at Reform UK, faces increasing scrutiny regarding his financial affairs.
The inquiry into Mr. Tice is reportedly focused on his failure to declare an interest in Israel while discussing antisemitism in Westminster Hall. The investigation commenced on July 28.
In response to the investigation, Mr. Tice expressed disbelief, stating that he is being scrutinized for opposing antisemitism. He highlighted that the Standards Commissioner is reviewing a complaint from an anti-Israel group regarding his failure to reference his register of interests at the beginning of a debate on UK democracy and Israeli influence. He also pointed out that the same group did not inform the Commissioner about Ayoub Khan MP’s failure to declare a substantial donation from a pro-Palestine group.
The probe against the Reform UK deputy leader is based on rule six of the MPs’ code of conduct, which mandates members to transparently disclose any relevant interests in parliamentary proceedings and interactions with public officials.
Regarding Mr. Farage, a previous standards investigation concerning his acceptance of a £5 million gift from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne was halted when he resigned as an MP. However, if he is re-elected in the upcoming Clacton by-election, the investigation will resume.
Reform has consistently asserted that the £5 million gift to Mr. Farage was a personal, unconditional contribution, negating the necessity for disclosure.
Standards Commissioner Daniel Greenberg is investigating whether Mr. Farage violated Parliamentary regulations requiring newly elected MPs to declare any pertinent gifts or donations received within a year before entering the Commons. The £5 million gift was given to Mr. Farage by Mr. Harborne shortly before announcing his candidacy in the Clacton constituency in 2024.
