John Healey has revealed that the inaugural Budget during Andy Burnham’s leadership will take place on October 28. The recently appointed Chancellor, who succeeded Rachel Reeves earlier this month, emphasized that the Budget aims to decentralize finances and authority from Westminster to all regions of the UK.
Asserting a commitment to fiscal discipline, Healey stated that the Budget will adhere to fiscal regulations, offering stability for businesses and households to strategize for the future. He expressed eagerness to proceed with the task at hand.
In a video announcement, Healey, one of Burnham’s initial Cabinet selections, highlighted the government’s fulfillment of pledges to alleviate cost of living pressures. Burnham’s administration, within its first week, eliminated VAT on household electricity bills and reintroduced a £2 cap on bus fares nationwide.
Additionally, plans were unveiled to reduce business rates by 20% for pubs and small music venues, providing vital support for these struggling sectors. Healey emphasized the government’s swift actions to rejuvenate communities and stimulate growth across the country.
Despite these efforts, challenges lie ahead in financing public services and alleviating financial burdens on families, especially in light of potential economic strains from the Iran conflict. Healey, who departed from Keir Starmer’s government over a defense spending dispute, faces the task of securing £5 billion for the defense investment plan announced earlier.
Furthermore, the government has yet to establish a timeline for meeting the 3% GDP target for national defense spending.
