A couple from California has been sentenced to over ten years in prison for the cruel killing of a one-year-old child. Samantha Garver, 26, and her partner Sergio Mena, 34, admitted to charges of second-degree murder and child abuse resulting in serious harm to Garver’s son, Henry Wheatley-Brown.
The tragic incident took place in Sugarloaf, near Big Bear City, California, where little Henry suffered fatal injuries while under Mena’s care on September 30, 2023. He succumbed to severe burns inflicted by Mena, who exposed him to scalding water in a bath before leaving to acquire drugs.
Authorities discovered that Henry had a history of abuse, with evidence of severe burns, bruises, and healing fractures on his body. Child services determined that the cause of his death was attributed to abuse or neglect.
Upon Mena’s return to the residence, he found Henry in excruciating pain from the burns but allegedly failed to provide aid. Both defendants neglected to seek medical attention for the child’s critical injuries, opting instead to use basic ointment.
The couple only contacted emergency services the next day when they noticed Henry’s declining health. Paramedics found him unresponsive, cold to the touch, and severely dehydrated. Sergio Mena received a 21-year sentence, while Samantha Garver was sentenced to 14 years in prison.
Reports indicate a history of abuse involving Henry and his siblings, prompting the San Bernardino County Department of Children and Family Services to intervene. Disturbing statements made by the mother, including contemplating harming her children, raised concerns about the family’s welfare.
Despite differing opinions among investigators, it was apparent that the children were at risk of harm. Family members, including the boy’s grandmother, downplayed the severity of the abuse, implying it was a common experience that could be overcome.
