A tragic incident in Glacier National Park, Montana, has resulted in the death of a man who fell 100 feet while being attacked by a surprised grizzly bear. This marks the first fatal bear mauling in the park since 1998. The victim, identified as 33-year-old Anthony Pollio from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was hiking alone on the Mount Brown Lookout trail at night when the attack occurred.
According to the investigation report by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee Board of Review, the attack was deemed stunningly rare. The incident took place in May, with Pollio encountering the bear in close proximity due to darkness and fallen trees obstructing visibility on the trail. Despite attempting to use bear spray, Pollio fell down a slope as the bear continued its assault.
After falling nearly 100 feet, Pollio attempted to climb back uphill but was fatally attacked by the bear. The report concluded that it was a defensive attack by a surprised grizzly bear, and DNA evidence suggested the bear was around 15 years old and likely a resident of Glacier Park.
Officials emphasized that bear attacks in the park are infrequent, with only 10 recorded since 1967. To prevent similar incidents, hikers are advised to remain vigilant, make noise while hiking, carry bear spray, and avoid hiking alone or at night. These precautions can help ensure the safety of visitors in bear country.
