Mohammed Suleman, the individual behind Barrow, Hepburn & Gale, the company responsible for crafting these boxes, expresses a lack of concern about their contents. He humorously mentions, “I worry more about what’s not being carried in them! There are strict rules and protocols in place for their use that should not be disregarded.”
Established in 1760, the firm’s origins trace back to John Hepburn, a tanner from Yorkshire, who relocated to London and established a tannery in Bermondsey, then a prominent center for leather tanning. Over time, the business expanded through mergers with other manufacturers, including one with the authority to manufacture despatch boxes for the British government.
Despite diversification into various leather products over the years, the company maintained its core expertise in producing despatch boxes with red stained leather and gold print, a design unchanged since Gladstone used one for his 1853 budget. Mr. Suleman, who acquired the firm 26 years ago, emphasizes the company’s strategic importance, especially as a long-standing supplier to the military.
The manufacturing process of the boxes remains traditional, with skills passed down through generations of workers across the country. Mr. Suleman stresses the importance of supporting local workshops and preserving these invaluable skills, contrasting the short-term focus that has plagued the country with their long-term commitment to quality and tradition.
While declining to disclose annual production volumes or costs, Mr. Suleman notes that demand fluctuates based on government activity. Each box is unique, with privately commissioned ones, such as Angelina Jolie’s, varying in price based on customization requests.
Personalization options for the boxes are diverse, catering to individual preferences like creating one for a vintage watch collector or another to house a collection of pens.
