Europe is currently facing a heatwave, with Spain potentially reaching a record-breaking temperature of 49C and France dealing with wildfires, evacuations, and a “firenado.”
The high temperatures have triggered wildfires in Spain, France, and Italy, with a ‘fire tornado’ causing destruction near Lacanau in south-west France. Over 2,000 hectares of land were engulfed by flames, leading to the evacuation of more than 10,000 people.
Spain’s national weather agency, AEMET, has issued warnings about the third heatwave of the summer, projecting temperatures to soar to 44C on Thursday, with a possibility of reaching 49C in Seville on August 2, surpassing the current record of 47.6C.
AEMET has highlighted the extreme risk of wildfires across mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands. In central Spain, firefighters are battling a massive blaze that has already consumed over 32,000 hectares since it started on July 16 near La Mierla.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited the affected area, emphasizing the urgency of addressing climate change to combat the devastating impact it has on communities. Meanwhile, Italy and France are also grappling with ongoing wildfires, prompting significant evacuation efforts and firefighting operations.
Experts emphasize that human-induced climate change is intensifying heatwaves and droughts, increasing the likelihood and severity of wildfires. Recent reports suggest a high probability of surpassing global temperature limits, leading to severe climate consequences such as ecosystem damage, extreme weather events, and rising sea levels.
