Robot Vacuum Explosion Leaves 25-Year-Old with Severe Burns

A young man faced a life-threatening situation when a robotic vacuum cleaner exploded at his residence, with his mother sharing additional chilling details of the incident. Lachie Perrem, aged 25, sustained severe burns covering 75% of his body due to the sudden eruption of flames from the vacuum device in his Brabham home on Airgate Close in Perth’s northeast on July 2. He was promptly taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital and has since undergone multiple surgeries.

Post-explosion images revealed shattered windows, charred walls, destroyed furniture, scorched floorboards, and debris scattered throughout the affected areas spanning from the kitchen to the living room.

Fiona Perrem, the man’s mother, shed light on the incident, stating that a leak in the vacuum’s battery, unbeknownst to her son, led to the ignition when he started cooking, resulting in the explosion.

The malfunctioning device has been dispatched to the state’s building and energy office for further investigation.

According to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services Western Australia, lithium-ion batteries, commonly found in robotic vacuums, pose significant risks. A spokesperson emphasized the potential dangers of lithium-ion batteries failing, leading to thermal runaway, which can trigger violent bursts, release toxic gases, and initiate intense fires rapidly.

Mr. Perrem has undergone three surgeries following the explosion, including procedures like wound debridement and skin grafts on various body parts. He temporarily lost his voice and is expected to undergo more surgeries in the near future.

An update on the GoFundMe page on July 20 indicated positive progress in Lachie’s recovery. His grafts are healing well, and his mobility, especially in his hands, has impressed the physio team. The removal of his feeding tube marked another significant step forward, with his face and neck showing promising healing progress. The family expressed gratitude for the support, care, and donations received during Lachie’s ongoing recovery journey.
