Ukraine’s top military leader, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, has been dismissed following widespread protests triggered by the removal of the popular Defense Minister. The Defense Minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, announced his removal a week ago due to disagreements with Syrskyi, sparking days of street demonstrations that highlighted divisions within the military regarding their approach towards Russia.
In response to the protests, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed confidence in Fedorov and assured that he would remain part of his team. On July 21, Zelensky extended an offer to Fedorov for a prominent government position aimed at unifying the technical aspects of the state and fostering its progress, though it remains uncertain if Fedorov has accepted the proposal.
Fedorov, aged 35, is recognized for his technological advancements and recruitment strategies. His tenure as Defense Minister coincided with military achievements, and his removal generated significant public outcry against the military leadership. Zelensky, after meeting with top generals, acknowledged the public sentiment, emphasizing that the society’s voice had been heard.
Syrskyi, in an attempt to address the situation, penned an article apologizing to Fedorov, highlighting his role in establishing a drone unit, and refuting claims of not supporting drone utilization widely. As a result of the developments, Mykhailo Drapatyi, the commander of Ukraine’s Joint Forces, will succeed Syrskyi.
Drapatyi gained recognition for a viral 2014 video where he drove an armored infantry fighting vehicle through a separatist blockade in Mariupol. Fedorov welcomed Drapatyi’s appointment, emphasizing it as a new chapter in the struggle for freedom and justice. Additionally, Fedorov expressed gratitude towards Syrskyi for his contributions to defending Ukraine.
