A woman in Tenerife, Carmen Romero, had a surprising experience when she went to the hospital with stomach cramps at the age of 24. To her shock, she found out she was actually in labor and about to give birth to her second daughter, despite not feeling any previous signs of pregnancy.
Carmen shared her unexpected journey on a TV show, revealing that she had gained weight and developed a hernia during her first pregnancy, which masked the signs of her second pregnancy. When she arrived at the hospital, she was informed that she was already in the process of delivering the baby.
Despite feeling unprepared and in disbelief, Carmen quickly found herself in the delivery room, where she gave birth within minutes. She later expressed her initial shock and detachment when the baby was placed on her, feeling like she had been given a child that wasn’t hers due to the surreal circumstances.
Following the birth, Carmen contemplated putting the baby up for adoption but ultimately changed her mind as she began to develop a bond with her daughter. The turning point came when her newborn experienced a health scare, prompting Carmen to realize her deep love and need to protect her child.
It was later revealed that Carmen’s situation was a cryptic pregnancy, a rare occurrence where individuals are unaware of their pregnancy until late stages. While cryptic pregnancies are infrequent, they do happen, with around 300 cases reported annually in the UK, though data in Spain is limited.
Carmen’s story sheds light on the complexities and emotional rollercoaster of experiencing a cryptic pregnancy, highlighting the unexpected twists and turns that can come with such a unique and life-changing event.
