Britons are likely to experience record-breaking heat in the UK with temperatures possibly reaching up to 41C, according to weather forecasts. The current highest temperature recorded in the UK stands at 40.3C, which occurred during the July 2022 heatwave. However, recent data indicates that temperatures could soar to 41C as another heatwave approaches.
The Met Office has warned of a return to “very warm” conditions by early August, with the GFS weather model projecting a steady rise in temperatures starting from July 29, possibly hitting highs of 31C in the south-east of England. Southern England could see temperatures of 30C on July 30, followed by potential highs of 31C in the south-west on July 31. Wales might also experience 30C temperatures on July 31, as per the GFS model.
By August 1, the weather model shows a sharp increase in temperatures with the east of England possibly reaching scorching highs of 41C, while regions from Sussex to Lincolnshire, including London, could see temperatures around 40C. The Midlands might experience highs of 38C, with 37C expected in Yorkshire. Parts of Wales bordering England could reach 31C or 32C, while Scotland and Northern Ireland are likely to see temperatures below 30C and 25C, respectively.
Temperature anomaly maps for August 31 indicate that England and Wales are forecasted to experience temperatures well above the seasonal average, depicted in deep red and black. The GFS model suggests that 10 counties in the east of England could witness temperatures of 40C or higher.
Looking ahead, the Met Office predicts continued warmth in the south for the rest of July and the potential for another heatwave by the start of August. The forecast for August 2 to August 16 anticipates above-normal temperatures, with chances of further hot spells, particularly in southern regions. However, there is also a risk of thunderstorms, with occasional summertime storms possible on certain days.
