US Prosecutor Suspended for Inappropriate Relationships

A senior prosecutor in the United States has been suspended for allegedly engaging in inappropriate relationships with three individuals, including a man who was under investigation for a sexual assault case. Camille Johnston, aged 46 and hailing from Ray County, was relieved of her duties by Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway following accusations of misconduct.

An emergency order was promptly issued by a judge, suspending Johnston from her position due to the allegations that have raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest. It is reported that Johnston had a romantic involvement with a suspect in a sexual assault case identified as Juan David Gutierrez.

The Attorney General’s Office asserts that Johnston visited the individual in Mississippi and later traveled to Florida for a vacation with him, failing to disclose his whereabouts despite being aware of them, which was considered a clear conflict of interest as the individual was facing prosecution in Ray County.

Gutierrez’s sexual assault trial has been postponed to at least September as a result of these developments. Additionally, Johnston is accused of being involved in another relationship with a lawyer from Ray County, identified as “T.T.”, who has represented criminal defendants against charges filed by Johnston in her capacity as a prosecutor. Court documents indicate that Johnston was required to disqualify herself from cases involving this lawyer and seek a special prosecutor.

Furthermore, a former employee of Johnston’s office alleges that she was terminated after disclosing Johnston’s relationship with a domestic violence suspect. Johnston reportedly withheld information related to this case from the victim, Ray County staff, and the circuit court once the police became aware of the situation.

In addition to these allegations, Johnston is accused of fostering a hostile work environment characterized by fear and tension through outbursts of anger and violence. The Missouri Attorney General’s Office has raised concerns that Johnston may have committed several offenses through these inappropriate relationships, including corruption and obstruction of justice.
