A British tourist claims he is stuck in Turkey following his arrest for allegedly being intoxicated, despite actually experiencing a severe asthma attack. Carl Ratcliffe, aged 47, traveled to the Susona Hotel in Bodrum with his fiancée Natalia Flynn, 49, aiming for an eight-day vacation on June 10. However, their plans turned into a nightmare soon after their arrival.
Just two days into their trip, Carl, who suffers from brittle asthma, suffered a serious attack while out for a walk. He was swiftly taken to Bodrum American Hospital and put into a medically induced coma, only waking up three days later.
While waiting for medical clearance to fly back home, Carl had another asthma episode on June 23 after watching a football match. Despite fellow holidaymakers calling for an ambulance, he claims that Turkish authorities misunderstood his condition and arrested him, believing he was drunk.
Allegedly, he was detained and faced threats of violence if he did not comply with the officers’ demands. Even though subsequent tests confirmed his sobriety, he was prevented from leaving the country by a judge.
Carl has now been stranded in Turkey for over a month, accumulating significant debts due to various expenses. Recounting his ordeal, he expressed his fear of encountering another health crisis while abroad.
The distressing incidents unfolded after the couple enjoyed a brief respite from the challenges, with Carl even proposing to Natalia. However, they were compelled to remain in Turkey pending clearance to travel, leading to the unfortunate events that followed.
Despite attempts to explain his medical condition, Carl found himself in custody and subjected to harsh treatment, including being confined in unsanitary conditions. He spent hours detained before being cleared of any wrongdoing, yet his attempts to leave the country were thwarted by legal restrictions.
The situation has left Carl feeling helpless and trapped in a situation he describes as a nightmare. His mother has voiced her anguish over the treatment he received and called for his safe return to the UK.
The Foreign Office has confirmed they are assisting the British national in Turkey and are liaising with local authorities. Inquiries have been made to both Bodrum Police and Bodrum American Hospital for their perspectives on the matter.
