A tragic incident in Bangkok has resulted in the death toll climbing to 30 following a devastating fire at a bar. Over 70 individuals were injured during the blaze at the Rong Beer Na Ladprao bar in northern Bangkok, with 24 in critical condition, as stated by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. This fire marks the deadliest in the city over the past 17 years, with the establishment claiming to have the capacity to hold up to 600 patrons.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire and the adherence of the business to safety regulations. Most of the deceased were discovered trapped in windowless restrooms, presumably attempting to escape the flames. Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt has ordered a comprehensive evaluation of similar establishments to evaluate potential risks and enhance safety measures through stricter law enforcement.
Mourners have placed floral tributes at the site of the tragedy, accompanied by heartfelt messages in various languages. Structural engineer Amorn Pimanmas highlighted several risk factors that could have exacerbated the fire hazards, such as limited air ventilation and the potential use of non-fire-retardant foam for decoration. He also noted discrepancies in the business’s licensing that might have impacted its safety requirements.
Pimanmas emphasized the importance of a reevaluation of fire safety protocols and the necessity for stringent law enforcement to prevent such tragedies in the future. The government’s role in ensuring strict enforcement of safety regulations has been underscored in light of this devastating event.
