A man has been sentenced to prison for causing the death of his three-month-old son by shaking him. Bradley Thomas, described as “sleep deprived,” inflicted fatal injuries on his son, Emmerson-Oak Thomas, with significant violence on October 5 last year. Following the incident, Emmerson showed signs of distress, but Thomas delayed seeking medical help for 30 minutes after waking his partner. Despite efforts to save the baby, he passed away on October 8 at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary.
Thomas, aged 23, was found guilty of murder at Teesside Crown Court and received a life sentence, with a minimum term of 14 years. The judge, Mr. Justice Sheldon KC, lamented that Emmerson was a joyful baby with a promising future, which was tragically cut short by Thomas’ actions. Thomas, who was under stress due to lack of sleep and caring responsibilities, failed to settle Emmerson during the night despite an arrangement with his partner to handle nighttime care.
Although Thomas expressed regret for his actions, he initially misled authorities about the circumstances of his son’s injuries. Evidence later confirmed that Thomas had violently shaken Emmerson, causing severe and irreversible brain damage. Detective Superintendent Deb Fenny acknowledged the emotional toll of the case and emphasized the pursuit of justice for Emmerson-Oak. She praised the collective effort of law enforcement, medical professionals, and legal authorities in uncovering the truth and ensuring accountability for Thomas’ actions.
The investigation into this tragic incident highlighted the importance of upholding justice for vulnerable victims like Emmerson-Oak. Despite the sorrowful outcome, the dedicated work of all involved in seeking justice for the infant was commended. The professionalism and compassion demonstrated throughout the investigation by Cleveland Police and related entities were essential in delivering closure for Emmerson-Oak’s family and ensuring accountability for the perpetrator.
