A 70-year-old British man, Malcolm Timbrell, shared his last encounter with his wife, friends, and neighbors who are feared to have perished in the wildfires in Spain. The couple, who had moved to Bedar in Almeria province after appearing on a Channel 4 show, planned to escape by car but were separated when Mr. Timbrell went back to save their cats. Despite his warnings, the group decided to walk ahead of the fast-moving fire, leaving Mr. Timbrell behind.
Tragically, a 93-year-old British woman is among the 13 confirmed fatalities in the devastating fires. She sustained severe burns, with 20% of her body affected, and succumbed to her injuries. Additionally, four more deceased individuals, possibly British, were found in a burnt-out vehicle.
Two British hikers were discovered alive but with severe burns, covering 40% of their bodies. They were rescued by a Civil Guard team who persisted in their search efforts, ultimately finding the survivors just as darkness fell. The pair is currently hospitalized in serious condition but are expected to recover.
Authorities believe that all victims were foreign tourists who attempted to flee on foot after abandoning their vehicles. Post-mortem examinations and DNA sampling are being conducted to identify the victims. Spain has been facing more frequent and intense heatwaves, with temperatures exceeding 40C, leading to tragic consequences like the recent wildfires.
The Foreign Office expressed condolences for those affected by the wildfires and assured support for impacted British nationals and their families. The Spanish emergency services are working diligently to manage the aftermath of this tragic event.
