“Counter-Terrorism Authorities Lead Probe in Widdecombe Death”

Police are actively investigating the death of Ann Widdecombe and are currently interrogating a suspect, who can be detained for up to 14 days using terrorism laws if necessary.

A 28-year-old white British man was apprehended in Rotherham on Saturday and then re-arrested on suspicion of involvement in terrorism acts. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed that the suspect was not previously known to the counter-terrorism program Prevent. Following new information after Widdecombe’s demise, counterterrorism authorities have taken charge of the case.

Lawrence Taylor, the head of national counter-terrorism policing, stated, “We are now leading the investigation based on new evidence, and we are exploring various leads to determine the motive for this incident.”

Mahmood extended an invitation to Reform UK leader Nigel Farage for a security meeting following Widdecombe’s passing. Widdecombe was discovered deceased with severe injuries at her residence in Haytor, Devon, around 11:40 am on Thursday. The police are continuing to question the suspect regarding Widdecombe’s death.

Devon and Cornwall Police emphasized they are keeping an open mind about the potential motive as counter-terrorism authorities oversee the investigation. The University of Aberdeen has initiated an inquiry into remarks made by a staff member concerning Widdecombe’s death.

The suspect, a white British male, was re-arrested on suspicion of terrorism-related offenses, allowing authorities to detain him for up to 14 days. Various officials have called for improved security measures for MPs and actions against online activities that incite violence. Counterterrorism authorities have assumed control of the investigation into Widdecombe’s killing after the discovery of new evidence.
