An elderly man in California was violently hurled through the air by a massive bison at Yellowstone National Park, leaving him with severe injuries, including a fractured hip. The incident occurred at the Bridge Bay Campground, where the man, accompanied by his grandson, encountered the 907kg bison while on an evening stroll. Despite being at a safe distance, well beyond the park’s required 25-yard boundary, the bison, agitated during rutting season, charged at the man, flipping him several feet into the air with its horn.
Witnesses, including former Army combat photographer Mike MacLeod, described the bison’s aggressive behavior prior to the attack, highlighting its unpredictable nature. The man’s grandson managed to escape, but the bison cornered the elderly man, causing significant harm. MacLeod and other campers intervened, diverting the bison’s attention and allowing for medical assistance to be provided to the injured man.
The victim was promptly taken to the hospital for treatment and remains under close observation. His family and witnesses note that his condition is critical. The National Park Service is currently investigating the incident to determine the circumstances that led to the bison’s aggression.
