Man Arrested in Connection with Death of Former MP Ann Widdecombe

Police have arrested a man in connection with the tragic death of former MP Ann Widdecombe, but they do not believe the incident was politically motivated. Widdecombe, aged 78, was discovered deceased at her residence in Haytor, a village on Dartmoor, Devon. The former Conservative MP, who later transitioned to being a Brexit Party MEP and then a Reform UK spokesperson, lived alone and was found by a carer with severe head injuries.

Law enforcement has not released the cause of death, but a 26-year-old white British male has been taken into custody on suspicion of her murder. The arrest took place in Newton Abbot, approximately 10 miles away from Widdecombe’s home. Devon and Cornwall Police’s Assistant Chief Constable emphasized in a press briefing that there is no indication of a political motive or terrorism involvement in the crime.

The specifics of the attack, including any theft, forced entry, or weapon use, have not been disclosed. Detective Chief Inspector Ilona Rosson stated that the investigation is progressing rapidly and urged anyone with information to come forward. Widdecombe’s family and friends are in the thoughts of the authorities during this difficult time.

Responding to the incident at Widdecombe’s bungalow in Haytor Vale, emergency services were called around midday on Thursday. The retired MP, living alone in her residence nicknamed Widdecombe’s Rest, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her relatives have been notified and are receiving support from trained personnel.

In a previous interview, Widdecombe expressed her lack of fear about potential threats, stating she never felt scared or lonely in her home. Despite occasional death threats, she dismissed them, emphasizing the importance of open interaction between MPs and constituents.
