Met Police Officer Sentenced to 7 Years for Raping Woman

A police officer from the Metropolitan Police has been sentenced to seven years in prison for raping a woman at her residence following a New Year’s Eve gathering. Rupert Edwards, 33, committed the assault while off duty. The victim, who had been drinking heavily, fell asleep on a couch as the clock struck midnight, according to prosecutor John Clifford during the trial at Southwark Crown Court.

The woman woke up to find herself surrounded by chocolates that party attendees had tried to place in her mouth. Edwards, who had joined the gathering in London after midnight, was present at the scene, the court was informed.

The victim had fragmented memories of the night but recalled sharing a taxi with Edwards and finding it odd that he did not exit the vehicle before her. It was revealed in court that he redirected the Uber ride from his destination to the victim’s residence.

Her next clear recollection was waking up beside the officer in bed, both unclothed. Edwards callously remarked on their sexual encounter, leaving the victim feeling “disgusted.” She emphasized that she had never consented to intercourse and would not have done so. Subsequently, Edwards allegedly solicited another sexual encounter through text messages.

In her impact statement read in court, the woman described feeling emotionally numb following the ordeal. She expressed, “I felt emotionally numb, as if there was a black spot over everything.” She added, “While I was not suicidal, I often felt that the idea of not waking up the next day was appealing. A conviction does not bring me closure. I will continue to live with the effects of what he has done.”

Edwards, residing in Bexhill, East Sussex, was arrested in April 2024 after the victim reported the incident to the police in October 2023. The crime occurred on New Year’s Day in January 2018. He had served as a police officer for over eight years before being suspended in 2022. On May 22, following a trial, he was found guilty of one count of rape.

Judge Nicholas Rimmer, while sentencing Edwards to seven years in prison, remarked that the offense occurred at the victim’s home, which should have been her place of safety. Despite being emotionless during sentencing, Edwards was also issued a restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim or going to any location where she might be present.

Before being led away by a court officer, Edwards exchanged smiles with his family in the public gallery. The Crown Prosecution Service representative, Timothy Greaves, stated, “Rupert Edwards preyed on a woman and took advantage of her.” He added, “Despite his claims that this was consensual, the evidence clearly showed that it was rape. We recognize that it can be challenging to report such offenses, and I commend the victim for coming forward.”

Greaves continued, “I hope today’s sentence provides some solace to all the women impacted by Edwards’ actions. It is due to their testimony that justice has been served.” He emphasized the importance of presenting evidence of a defendant’s behavioral pattern in court and highlighted its pivotal role in securing convictions.
