After a long wait, the Meta-owned app is finally resolving this issue by introducing unique usernames. With this upcoming feature, users will have the option to share their username instead of their phone number.
According to WhatsApp, sharing a phone number can be a significant step, especially when connecting with new acquaintances like classmates, neighbors, event attendees, or members of group chats. The new usernames aim to offer a more casual way to chat without divulging personal phone numbers.
Moreover, the update will enhance privacy in group conversations. Users engaging in community chats or social groups can now participate without immediately revealing their phone numbers to unfamiliar individuals.
To secure their preferred usernames before the full launch, users can start reserving them now. Given the platform’s massive user base, popular usernames may get taken quickly, so early reservations increase the chances of securing the desired username without missing out.
To reserve a username, users must update WhatsApp to the latest version and navigate to Settings > Account > Username.
The rollout of this feature will occur gradually in the upcoming months, with WhatsApp notifying users when usernames become accessible in their respective regions.
