“Global Tourist Hotspots Face Overcrowding Crisis”

Amidst the desire to explore new cultures and cuisines during holidays, the influx of tourists in popular destinations has led to overcrowding issues. Following a period of restricted travel due to the pandemic, tourists are flocking to well-known places, contributing to overcrowding concerns.

Recent research by MoneyTransfers.com identified Phuket in Thailand as the most crowded tourist spot globally, with a striking ratio of 118 tourists to each local resident. Known for its picturesque beaches like Kata and Karon, Phuket attracts a significant number of visitors, especially during peak seasons when beaches can become overcrowded.

Thailand dominated the top 10 list of overcrowded destinations, followed by Greece and Turkey. Greek city Heraklion secured the seventh spot, with 22 tourists per local resident, while Venice, Italy, had 21 tourists for every resident. Venice recently implemented a controversial tourist charge of €5 during busy days, with plans to increase it to €50 to manage overcrowding in the historic city.

The initiative in Venice aimed to discourage peak-period visits, considering the estimated 30 million annual visitors to the city. Similar overcrowding challenges were observed in Rhodes, Greece, and Miami, USA, with high tourist-to-resident ratios. Local authorities hope that such measures will help alleviate overcrowding issues and maintain the sustainability of these popular destinations.
