A British man passed away following a sudden illness at an airport in Turkey before his return flight. David Kelly, a resident of Barrhead, Renfrewshire, Scotland, was urgently admitted to intensive care, placed in a medically induced coma, and kept alive on life support while he fought for his life far away from home.
His wife, Dawn, stood by him in a Turkish hospital for four weeks before he was transported back on 8 June via a specialized flying intensive care unit. Upon arrival, he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley, where he peacefully passed away on 18 June surrounded by his family.
The heartbreaking news of his death was shared by his family through the Facebook page of their business, Barrhead Joinery, as reported by Need To Know.
In their statement, they expressed, “We regret to inform you that after a brave battle, our dear David Kelly passed away on Thursday, 18th June. Barrhead Joinery will cease operations, and we extend our gratitude for the support received by David over the years. With love from Dawn, Gemma, and Sophie.”
A fundraiser recounted how what was supposed to be a relaxing vacation turned into a tragic ordeal, highlighting the sudden deterioration of David’s health at the airport just before his departure.
They stated, “The leisurely holiday in Turkey quickly turned into a nightmare none of us could have foreseen. David fell critically ill at the airport shortly before his flight home. His condition worsened rapidly, leading to his urgent transfer to intensive care.
“After being placed in a coma and sustained by life support, David fought for his life far from home. Dawn, his devoted wife, stood by him in a Turkish hospital for an agonizing four weeks, never leaving his side as he displayed remarkable strength and courage.”
The message continued, “Despite the collective efforts, our valiant David peacefully passed away on 18th June, surrounded by his beloved family.”
David, described as a cherished husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend, was remembered as a selfless individual always ready to assist others. The fundraiser emphasized the importance of supporting those closest to him in their time of need.
Condolences poured in from the local community, with Noreen McHugh expressing her deep sadness and admiration for David’s character and professionalism. Another individual shared a heartfelt message, recalling David’s kindness and offering sincere condolences to his family.
Funds raised will assist Dawn and the family, cover funeral costs, and contribute to donations for Kidney Research UK and the Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Alexandra Hospital.
