A recent analysis suggests that individuals holding Premium Bonds who have never received a prize may have missed out on the opportunity to more than double their money elsewhere.
On average, those with unsuccessful Premium Bonds have accumulated £128.91 in savings over a period of 8.1 years. However, a study by AJ Bell reveals that if this amount had been placed in a standard cash savings account, it could have increased by 17% to approximately £150.82 during the same timeframe.
Alternatively, investing the initial £128.91 in a global tracker fund could have yielded a growth of 162%, resulting in a total of £338.30.
For those starting with a larger sum like £5,000, the potential returns could have been £5,850 through cash savings or a substantial £13,122 through investments.
In the past 8.1 years, consumer prices have increased by 47.9%, requiring £191 today to maintain the same purchasing power. It is noted that 14.3 million Premium Bond holders, constituting 62% of all holders, have never won a prize.
As of now, there are over 22 million Premium Bond holders, each with odds of 22,000 to 1 for a £1 bond to win a prize.
Premium Bonds, a savings product offered by NS&I, function by entering holders into a monthly prize draw instead of providing interest on their savings.
The prizes range from £25 to £1 million, with a few higher-value prizes compared to numerous smaller ones. The maximum savings limit for Premium Bonds stands at £50,000, with each £1 invested corresponding to a unique bond number.
Sarah Coles, head of personal finance at AJ Bell, emphasized the lack of interest payments on Premium Bonds and the potential impact on long-term spending power if no prizes are won. She recommended individuals review their overall returns and consider alternative investment or saving options for better financial growth.
To check if they have won, holders can use the online prize checker tool provided by NS&I or the Premium Bonds prize checker app.
An NS&I spokesperson highlighted the appeal of Premium Bonds as a fun savings method that offers the chance of tax-free prizes, full capital return, and easy access to funds, contrasting it with the potential risks associated with other investment types.
