“Nigel Farage Faces Scrutiny Over Financial Disclosures”

Under scrutiny, Nigel Farage, the head of Reform, is being warned that he is not a target of an establishment conspiracy amidst accusations of not disclosing financial benefits from a convicted criminal. Baroness Harriet Harman, a former chair of the Commons standards committee and ex-Deputy Labour leader, conveyed this message while Mr. Farage maintained his innocence, claiming victimization by an alleged establishment plot against Reform. Richard Tice, his deputy, also criticized an investigative journalist during the ordeal.

Mr. Farage is currently under investigation by Parliament’s standards commissioner for failing to disclose a £5 million gift from Christopher Harborne, a billionaire based in Thailand. Additionally, he faces fresh allegations of not declaring financial benefits received from George Cottrell, a convicted criminal, before becoming an MP. According to claims, Mr. Farage was accused of violating parliamentary regulations by accepting staffing, security, and housing services from Cottrell, known as “Posh George,” in the year leading up to his MP tenure.

During Mr. Farage’s election in 2024, MPs were obliged to report gifts exceeding £300 received in the previous year unless these gifts were deemed unrelated to their political activities by others. Possible repercussions for breaching these rules include Commons suspension, triggering a recall petition and a by-election in his constituency.

Mr. Farage asserted on Sunday that he had abided by the rules, denying any misconduct, and contemplating legal action against The Sunday Times. He accused the establishment of resorting to any means to undermine Reform, emphasizing their intention to challenge the prevailing status quo.

Baroness Harman emphasized the impartiality of the parliamentary commissioner on standards, highlighting that the investigation aims to ensure transparency in the political system. She underscored the importance of adhering to the rules to maintain the integrity of Parliament.

Reform UK’s Treasury spokesman, Robert Jenrick, clarified that Cottrell, an acquaintance of Mr. Farage, has no official role within Reform despite allegations suggesting otherwise. The party spokesperson reiterated that Cottrell’s involvement was voluntary and aimed at facilitating communication with Mr. Farage’s office, refuting any formal association with the party.

Labour minister Olivia Bailey expressed astonishment at Mr. Farage’s response to the allegations, emphasizing the need for accountability and cooperation with the investigation. She criticized attempts to deflect attention and urged the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner to proceed with the inquiry.
