A father of three who went to see his doctor due to difficulty swallowing food has shared his heartbreaking experience of being informed that he has terminal cancer. John Robertson, a 35-year-old resident of Ayr, Scotland, was diagnosed with stage four oesophageal adenocarcinoma last month. This rare form of cancer affects the glandular cells in the oesophagus. He initially experienced swallowing issues in February and rapidly lost three stone in just two and a half months, accompanied by severe chest pain.
Following his GP visit, John underwent an urgent endoscopy that revealed a significant tumour covering approximately 75% of his oesophagus, along with a bleed. The cancer has now metastasized to various parts of his body, including his lungs, throat, liver, and right adrenal gland. Medical professionals have given him an estimated nine months to live, as reported by the Daily Record.
Expressing profound sadness, John mentioned his anguish at the thought of not being able to witness his children – Jorja, 15, Paris-Cole, eight, and Clay-Ty, four – grow up, or share a future with his 29-year-old wife and partner of 11 years, Nicole. He described the news as devastating and world-crushing, stating that his primary desire is to watch his kids mature and support them through life’s journey.
John, who has always maintained good health and fitness, became alarmed when he started experiencing food blockages while eating. Subsequently, he developed intense chest pain and a constriction sensation around his ribcage, prompting him to seek medical attention. CT scans and biopsies confirmed the cancer diagnosis, with doctors indicating that the disease likely went unnoticed for an extended period.
Currently, John is following a liquid-only diet and is preparing to undergo chemotherapy, potentially requiring a feeding tube. Despite his condition, his blood tests, liver function, and heart rate remain stable. He expressed disbelief at how he appears healthy outwardly while battling a life-threatening illness.
To fund private treatment and explore clinical trials unavailable through the NHS, John initiated a fundraising campaign. He is awaiting confirmation of his participation in trials conducted in Germany and London. The raised funds will also contribute to creating lasting memories with his family.
In an effort to make the most of the time he has left, John is actively engaging in activities to create lasting memories with his loved ones. He intends to be present for all significant milestones by preparing cards and recording video messages for future celebrations.
