A 19-year-old teenager has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 17 years for intentionally driving his car into a mother of three outside a bar. Kian Bateman, under the influence of nitrous oxide, struck and killed Shelley Davies, 38, in an altercation outside a venue in Cardiff. Found guilty of murder and causing grievous bodily harm to Davies’ partner, David Bratcher, Bateman’s actions were deemed deliberate by Cardiff Crown Court.
The tragic incident occurred after Bateman attended a music event at a local club and later returned to the venue where a confrontation ensued. Witnessing his brother in a dispute with a group, Bateman used his vehicle as a weapon, driving into the group and running over Davies, who later succumbed to her injuries in the hospital. Although Bateman claimed he did not intend to harm Davies, the court ruled his actions as murder due to the deliberate nature of his attack on Bratcher.
Described as a vibrant individual and a healer for those battling addiction, Davies was mourned by her family in court, with Bratcher expressing the profound impact of her sudden loss on their lives. In his defense, Bateman’s legal team highlighted his lack of premeditation and remorse for the incident, citing his learning disability and limited driving experience.
Acknowledging the devastating consequences of Bateman’s actions, the prosecution emphasized the deliberate use of the car as a weapon, leading to the loss of life and injuries. Despite the conclusion of the case, the focus remains on supporting Davies’ family and friends through their grief. Detective Superintendent Mark O’Shea of South Wales Police extended gratitude to witnesses and the community for their cooperation during the investigation.
