A young England supporter has made a significant decision to forego his £10,000 house deposit savings in favor of an unforgettable World Cup journey with his 80-year-old grandfather. Jacob Allmendinger, 21, expressed no remorse about redirecting his five years’ worth of savings towards an adventure with his grandad, Geoff Golliker. Originally intended for a future home purchase, Jacob postponed his property aspirations to embark on an upcoming trip to the United States with his grandfather.
“I believe I can always earn back the money. At my age, I can afford to delay buying a house for a couple of years. However, the opportunity to attend the World Cup with my grandad is irreplaceable,” stated Jacob. The duo, hailing from North Ferriby, East Yorkshire, will depart for their North America excursion, centered around England’s World Cup journey, this Friday.
Choosing to include his grandad in the expedition was a straightforward decision for Jacob, who emphasized their strengthened bond through football, especially since the loss of his grandmother in 2020. Describing their relationship as more akin to best friends than the typical grandparent-grandchild dynamic, the pair frequently attends Hull City matches together, including witnessing the Tigers’ promotion to the Premier League at Wembley in May.
Embarking on a meticulously planned trip, Jacob and Geoff will traverse through New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Mexico City, Miami, and back to New York, tracing England’s path across the continent. While football is a key aspect of their journey, Jacob highlighted that only a small fraction of the adventure revolves around the sport, with the overarching excitement lying in exploring North America together.
Geoff, a retired insurance professional, eagerly accepted the invitation, expressing growing anticipation as their departure draws near. With England’s upcoming match against Panama crucial for securing progression in the tournament, the duo eagerly looks forward to potentially following the Three Lions further in the competition.
