“Study Finds Australian Youth Bypass Social Media Ban”

A recent study indicates that despite the implementation of a social media ban for those under 16 in Australia, the majority of young people continue to access these platforms. The study reveals that 85% of participants under 16 still use social media, mostly through their own accounts, bypassing age verification checks.

The ban, which was put into effect in December, is facing challenges with enforcement and compliance, as many youths are finding ways to circumvent the restrictions. Research conducted by the University of Newcastle shows that a significant number of teenagers are evading the ban through methods like self-declaring their age, using fake accounts, or employing private browsers.

Although the ban is still in its early stages, the study published in The BMJ suggests that it may take up to a decade to fully understand its impact. The findings highlight the need for improved mechanisms for accountability and education to ensure compliance with the regulations.

Another survey by the Molly Rose Foundation indicates that a considerable portion of Australian adolescents aged 12 to 15 still maintain access to restricted social media platforms, such as TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram, despite the ban. The foundation’s CEO, Andy Burrows, expressed concerns over the ban’s effectiveness in safeguarding minors online and emphasized the importance of a comprehensive strategy to protect children from harmful content.

In response to these findings, the UK government has proposed a similar ban for under 16s, which is expected to encompass popular platforms like Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook. The government assures that their approach will include robust age verification checks to prevent minors from bypassing the restrictions.

Overall, the research underscores the ongoing challenges in regulating underage access to social media and emphasizes the need for continuous efforts to enhance online safety for young users.
