“UK Proposes Ban on Gay Conversion Therapy”

A proposed ban on harmful gay and trans conversion therapies could lead to perpetrators facing five years in prison and significant fines. The draft law, which has been long-awaited and aims to prohibit discredited practices, sets a criminal threshold for abusive acts that cause serious harm to victims. Referred to as “gay cure therapy,” these practices involve trying to suppress a person’s sexuality or gender identity.

The Conversion Practices Bill, part of a Labour manifesto commitment from 2024, covers England and Wales. However, the legislative process is not expected to begin soon, making it unlikely to become law this year. Research conducted during Theresa May’s tenure revealed that nearly 18% of LGBT+ individuals in the UK have experienced attempts to change or “cure” them.

Galop, an LGBT+ anti-abuse charity, reported that such harmful practices are still prevalent today. They handled 195 cases between 2022 and 2025, with over two-thirds being recent or ongoing. The government’s Office for Equality and Opportunity highlighted ongoing physical, sexual, economic, and psychological abuse endured by individuals.

Minister for Equalities Olivia Bailey emphasized the urgency of banning conversion practices to protect individuals from abuse based on their identity. The President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, Professor Subodh Dave, welcomed the publication of the Bill, emphasizing the importance of supporting healthcare professionals in having appropriate conversations with patients.

Jasmine O’Connor, co-chief executive of Galop, praised the legislation as a crucial step in addressing conversion practices and protecting LGBT+ individuals from covert abuse. The Bishop of Manchester, David Walker, representing the Church of England, welcomed the Bill as a positive move towards ending practices that have caused long-lasting harm to LGBT+ individuals.
