“£52M Confiscated in Brink’s-Mat Heist Connection”

£52 million, nearly double the amount stolen by the infamous Brink’s-Mat robbers, has been confiscated from a company associated with the heist over 40 years later. The offshore firm belonged to Geoffrey Greenlees, a former British solicitor’s clerk connected to the 1983 gold bullion raid at Heathrow airport.

Investigations by the Daily Mirror uncovered that Greenlees was accused of banking £4.1 million obtained from the crime in Dubai before fleeing to Manila, where he lived as the patron of the Philippine Lawn Bowls Association until his death at 84 years old.

Recently, Dutch financial newspaper Het Financieele Dagblad disclosed that Greenlees was the beneficial owner of MCL Netherlands, a company established in 1981 with investments primarily in the Australian food industry. The company had over £60 million deposited in the ING bank, prompting inquiries about Greenlees’s past in 2015.

In 2017, Dutch authorities seized MCL’s accounts on suspicion of money laundering, resulting in a £60 million penalty imposed in 2024. The fine was divided, with over £40 million going to Australian tax authorities and the remainder to the Dutch Treasury.

Although the Brink’s-Mat robbery was initially part of the investigation, prosecutors found no evidence linking the seized cash to the heist. The seizure was based on “money laundering without an underlying offense,” making it challenging to trace the origin of the funds.

Greenlees’s involvement was also highlighted in the leaked Panama Papers in 2016, revealing his association with shell companies. Furthermore, he was connected to the Brink’s-Mat gang through Jean Savage, the common-law wife of robber John “Little Legs” Lloyd.

The intricate web of offshore transactions and money laundering schemes surrounding the Brink’s-Mat robbery continues to intrigue investigators and the public alike. The legacy of this high-profile crime remains shrouded in mystery, with key players either deceased, on the run, or entangled in legal battles.
