The jerseys worn by David Beckham during the match where he received a red card as the captain of England are up for auction.
Beckham made history by becoming the first player to be sent off twice while playing for the national team. The incidents occurred during matches against Austria in the World Cup in 2005 and against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup.
These iconic shirts, worn by Beckham in the first half and the second half of the 2005 match, will be available for purchase on Thursday, with an estimated value of around £30,000.
David Convery, Head of Sporting Memorabilia at BUDDS auctioneers, commented on the significance of these items, stating that Beckham’s memorabilia remains highly sought after, especially these shirts that mark a memorable yet challenging chapter in his England career.
Reflecting on the historical match, Convery added, “Having both shirts from that particular game is a rare find, particularly given the match’s place in English football history.”
Beckham’s red card incident on October 8, 2005, during the England vs. Austria World Cup qualifying match at Old Trafford in Manchester marked a significant moment in his career, making him the first England captain to receive such a sanction.
Following the match, both Beckham and England manager Sven-Göran Eriksson criticized the decision, with even the Austrian coach acknowledging the contentious nature of the red card.
Currently, Beckham is present at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, maintaining communication with England captain <a aria-label="" class="TextLink_text-link__dBSS
