In a fiery social media tirade, US President Donald Trump accused unidentified “vandals” of causing damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington DC. Trump took to his preferred platform, Truth Social, to announce that federal authorities had apprehended multiple suspects linked to the vandalism at the iconic site.
During the early hours of Sunday, Trump vented online about the ongoing arrests related to the “disgraceful Vandalism” at the Reflecting Pool. He expressed outrage over the destruction, highlighting a significant gash inflicted on the structure with a blade, along with the pouring of damaging chemicals into the pool.
In response to the incident, contractors notified Trump of the need to drain the Reflecting Pool for restoration, ensuring swift repairs after the costly renovation project initiated by the President faced setbacks. Notably, a former Olympic athlete, David Hearn, found himself entangled in the controversy after being detained by Park Police for allegedly tampering with the pool liner.
Hearn, a three-time Olympic canoeist for the US, recounted how he inadvertently triggered his detention while observing a loose piece of the pool liner. Despite denying any intentional damage, Hearn faced hours of detainment and is scheduled for a court appearance in July.
Trump’s concerns over the Reflecting Pool’s condition were exacerbated by journalist Jonathan Karl’s report on its deteriorating state, leading to accusations against the reporter for allegedly tampering with the pool. The President’s administration had previously celebrated the completion of the restoration, only to face issues with algae growth in the pool shortly after.
Efforts to address the algae problem included the installation of nanobubbler technology, as confirmed by the US Department of the Interior. Trump claimed a significant reduction in algae levels following intervention, emphasizing the historical challenges faced by successive administrations regarding the Reflecting Pool’s upkeep.
The Reflecting Pool saga underscores ongoing concerns about preserving the memorial’s integrity, with efforts to combat algae accumulation ongoing to maintain the site’s iconic status.
