A man is set to face charges in court for allegedly starting a fire at a memorial wall in Golders Green, located in north London. Ali Fallahi, a 45-year-old individual from Ilford, London, is accused of initiating the suspected arson incident at the location on Limes Avenue on April 27.
Following an investigation conducted by counter-terrorism authorities, Fallahi is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, June 18. It is claimed that Fallahi intentionally damaged a memorial cabinet belonging to Miga Rally through fire, with the intent to destroy or damage the property.
The memorial wall, erected by the Miga Rally community group, serves as a tribute to numerous protesters allegedly killed in an Iran crackdown in January. Part of the wall commemorates individuals who lost their lives in the Hamas attack during the Nova music festival in Israel in 2023.
The fire was ignited around 12:15 am in a cabinet adjacent to the wall, though the incident was not reported until approximately 7:30 pm the same day. Fortunately, the blaze was promptly noticed and extinguished by the Miga Rally community group, preventing it from spreading to the wall itself.
In response to the incident, Miga Rally issued a statement emphasizing the peaceful nature of the memorial wall as a place of remembrance and honoring the memories of the deceased. They condemned any act of vandalism targeting such a site, labeling it as an assault on the values of remembrance, dignity, and community unity.
The Metropolitan Police disclosed that Fallahi holds dual British and Iranian nationality. Additionally, a 38-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the event but was subsequently released without further action taken.
Commander Helen Flanagan, the head of counter-terrorism policing in London, expressed determination to prosecute all individuals implicated in the series of arson attacks affecting the Jewish community and Iranian diaspora in the city. She urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
