“Expats in Canada Face Shocking Phone Bill Reality”

Moving to a different country is a major decision that often brings unexpected financial challenges. One British expat who relocated to Canada shared her surprise at the high cost of phone services in her new home.

Louise Ware-Armstrong, a lifestyle and travel vlogger who moved from the UK to Niagara Falls in Ontario, highlighted the significant expense of phone plans in Canada in a TikTok video. She revealed that her combined monthly expenses for mobile phone, home internet, and TV services amounted to around 400 Canadian dollars (£215).

According to Louise, finding an affordable phone plan in Canada is a struggle, with even basic plans starting at $60 a month. This revelation sparked a discussion among viewers, highlighting the steep cost of living related to communication services in Canada.

While Canadian mobile prices have seen some decline in recent years, the country still ranks among the pricier markets globally for wireless services, as per the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). Comparatively, the average monthly mobile bill in Canada is approximately CA$64 (£34), significantly higher than in the UK.

Studies consistently place Canada as one of the more expensive countries for mobile phone services due to limited competition and higher infrastructure expenses. Louise’s experience underscores how the cost of phone and internet services can be a major financial challenge for expats settling in Canada.

Aside from phone and internet costs, Louise shared details of her overall monthly budget in Canada, including rent and utility expenses. Despite adjusting to various expenses, it was the inflated phone and internet bills that left the strongest impression on her finances post-relocation.
