“UK to Ban Under-16s from Major Social Media Platforms”

A series of popular social media platforms will soon prohibit under-16s from accessing them, and impose strict limitations on others, as Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasizes his commitment to safeguarding children’s well-being. The new regulations were detailed by Sir Keir on Monday, June 15, indicating that individuals under 16 will be barred from using platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Threads, Facebook, X, YouTube, Snapchat, and Reddit. Notably, messaging services like WhatsApp and Signal will be exempt from the blanket restriction.

While platforms deemed “high risk” will face a complete blackout, those considered “safer” will encounter stringent controls, including the elimination of features like disappearing messages and live-streaming. The government’s focus extends to AI chatbots and gaming platforms, with the aim of implementing a more comprehensive ban than any other nation has pursued to date.

In an effort to “restore childhood to children,” Sir Keir emphasized the need for a decisive action, stating, “Tech companies had their opportunity and faltered, prompting us to step in to shield children, support parents, and establish a new standard for future generations.”

The Prime Minister has confirmed the swift progression of government actions, with legislation slated for introduction to Parliament before Christmas Day, leading to the operationalization of the ban by early 2027. Addressing the media today, Sir Keir asserted that a complete ban is the most appropriate course of action.

Reflecting on the forthcoming challenges for parents of determined teenagers, Sir Keir likened the digital restrictions to age limits on alcohol, arguing that the existence of loopholes for tech-savvy youths should not prompt a reduction in the age threshold.

This crackdown follows the groundbreaking announcement that the UK will pioneer regulations making it infeasible for minors to send, receive, or view explicit images on their smartphones. Tech leaders have been given an ultimatum to enhance device security or face severe penalties, potentially including imprisonment.

The urgent intervention comes in response to a disturbing revelation by the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), which exposed a manual on the dark web advising predators to exploit AI “nudifying” tools to manipulate innocent images, subsequently using these images in targeted extortion schemes.

Analyzing the potential methods for implementing the social media ban and the regulatory measures likely to be enacted is a focal point for the Mirror.

A comparable ban on social media usage by teenagers has already been implemented in Australia since last December, targeting ten major social media platforms and imposing substantial fines up to £26.5m (A$49.5m) on those that fail to prevent under-16-year-olds from using their services.

The enforcement has effectively blocked over a million unauthorized accounts. Statistics from Ofcom reveal that approximately 95% of adolescents aged 13 to 15 possess at least one social media account. To replicate Australia’s achievements, the UK is anticipated to implement digital ID verifications and advanced facial recognition technology to prevent underage individuals from circumventing the rules.

Although specific details are still forthcoming, the proposed framework aims to reduce online risks for under-
