“Universal Credit System Criticized for Neglecting Individuals”

Universal Credit has been criticized as a flawed system that easily dismisses and neglects individuals, according to the Secretary of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). Pat McFadden condemned the welfare program established by former Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith, arguing that the system’s shortcomings were not accidental but intentional.

The cost of Universal Credit to UK taxpayers amounts to £67 billion annually, prompting ministers to face internal resistance from MPs seeking welfare reforms. Last year, Keir Starmer encountered significant opposition over disability benefit cuts, leading to a last-minute reversal before a crucial vote.

During a visit to the Netherlands to explore youth employment strategies, Mr. McFadden expressed concerns about the design flaw in Universal Credit that allows people to be sidelined without assistance or obligations. He highlighted the contrast with the Dutch system, which prioritizes interventions to prevent inactivity and system failures.

Efforts to overhaul welfare were absent from the King’s Speech, but government officials are expected to revisit reform initiatives. Labour leadership contender Andy Burnham recently advocated for a proactive approach to reduce welfare spending and redirect funds towards defense priorities.
