“Miracle Premature Twins Beat Odds, Thrive After Months in Hospital”

A pair of twins, considered “miracles,” were born prematurely, spending eight months in the hospital. One of the twins had hands the size of her father’s fingernail. Amy Sharkey, 32, delivered her daughter Orla at 23 weeks and two days, weighing only 1lb 1oz, followed by her son Frankie weighing 1lb 5oz four days later. The twins faced survival odds of less than 10 percent.

Frankie was hospitalized for 161 days before being discharged in February 2026. Orla continued her battle for another 61 days until the family was reunited in April of the same year. Despite ongoing health challenges, the twins are currently progressing well.

Describing their tiny sizes, Jack, a construction worker from Linlithgow, Scotland, mentioned that Orla was as small as his hand, comparable to a mango with tiny arms and legs. He emphasized that her hands were the size of his fingernail. Frankie, not much larger, was also the size of Jack’s hand. He highlighted that Orla’s feisty nature and Frankie’s affectionate personality were evident even before their due date.

Amy’s pregnancy progressed normally until her 20-week scan revealed unexpected complications. Despite no prior signs of concern, she was already two centimeters dilated four and a half months before the due date. An emergency cervical stitch was inserted on August 20, crucial for prolonging the pregnancy.

Following a hospital admission due to amniotic sac leakage, Orla’s premature birth at 23 weeks and two days, weighing as much as a small bag of sugar, required immediate medical attention. Frankie was delivered four days later due to an infection risk from Orla’s placenta.

Orla faced significant health challenges, including a bowel infection and multiple surgeries within her first few days of life. The parents were asked multiple times to consider palliative care for their baby. Remarkably, Orla underwent successful surgery to reverse a stoma and reconnect her bowel. Despite lacking a colon, she exceeded medical expectations.

Frankie, diagnosed with chronic lung disease and pulmonary hypertension, underwent eye surgery for Retinopathy of Prematurity. Both twins required extended hospital stays, with Frankie on continuous oxygen support.

Looking ahead, Amy anticipates ongoing health issues for Orla but hopes for Frankie’s independence from the oxygen tube. The couple credits the dedicated care of nurses and doctors from the Simpsons Special Care Babies Unit and the Ronald MacDonald charity for their twins’ survival. Jack expressed gratitude for the relentless support received during their challenging journey, emphasizing the twins’ miraculous resilience and the unwavering dedication of the medical staff.
