“UK Kebab Company Fined £500k for Selling Fake ‘Lamb'”

An Essex-based company that distributed kebabs to takeaways and restaurants nationwide has been fined £500,000 for selling “lamb” that was predominantly “skin and fat.”

During the trial at Swansea Crown Court, it was revealed that Kismet Kebabs Ltd, based in Chelmsford, had been mislabeling their kebabs as lamb when they actually contained a mix of fat, skin, various meats, and mechanically recovered meat products. The judge criticized the company for engaging in significant deception over an extended period.

Prosecutor Lee Reynolds stated that the company had deliberately deceived customers by falsely marketing kebabs as lamb across the UK. Investigations found that the so-called “lamb kebabs” contained minimal lamb, with the company purchasing other meats, skin, and fat, and then labeling the end product as lamb.

In late 2020 and early 2021, Swansea Council’s trading standards team conducted a regional sampling exercise on kebab meat from local establishments. Tests showed that the meat content in Kismet Kebabs’ products did not match the labels, prompting further investigations.

Essex County Council, which had a history of collaboration with Kismet Kebabs, terminated their partnership due to concerns over labeling discrepancies and potential health risks identified during an audit of the factory.

A multi-agency team led by Swansea Council Trading Standards visited Kismet Kebabs’ factory in May 2021 and raised multiple concerns regarding the production, packaging, and labeling of the kebabs. Authorities discovered that the products labeled as “lamb kebabs” contained little lamb and were primarily made up of fat, skin, mechanically recovered meat, and other meats.

The court heard that the company had engaged in organized fraudulent activities and misled wholesalers, retailers, and consumers. Despite sentencing guidelines suggesting a much higher fine, the judge imposed a £500,000 penalty and ordered the company to pay prosecution costs.

Kismet Kebabs Ltd, admitting to one count of fraud by false representation, emphasized that it had made significant improvements since the wrongdoing occurred. The judge acknowledged these changes but highlighted the company’s past dishonesty. The firm was granted four years to settle the fine and costs.
