Experts have issued a caution regarding the presence of questionable cosmetic items, often referred to as “snake oil,” making their way into the UK market through Amazon. A parliamentary committee has probed the unregulated cosmetics industry in the UK, labeling it a “wild west” scenario. The investigation highlighted products like a skin cream sourced from poisonous frogs, such as Kambo, a hazardous substance from the giant monkey frog, being traded by unauthorized vendors.
During the Science, Innovation, and Technology Committee session, Richard Knight, the Chartered Trading Standards Institute’s lead officer for cosmetics and beauty, expressed concerns about the unregulated nature of Amazon’s platform, putting British consumers at risk. Knight singled out Kambo as a concerning product, emphasizing its potentially harmful effects on the skin due to its origins from Amazonian tree frogs.
The committee also delved into other risky cosmetic items like UV nail gels and skin lighteners, labeling them as “snake oil” products. These items, some of which are of American origin, may contain ingredients not permitted in the UK due to different regulatory standards. The dangerous practice of harvesting Kambo involves capturing giant monkey frogs in the Amazon rainforest, extracting toxic mucus from their skin, and applying it for purported health benefits. This ritual has been associated with severe health complications, including deaths, seizures, and liver failure.
Amazon, as the primary retail platform facilitating the influx of such products from overseas, has faced criticism for not adequately vetting overseas sellers. Despite Amazon’s denial of selling Kambo, concerns persist about the platform’s role in distributing potentially harmful cosmetics to unsuspecting consumers.
In line with efforts to regulate the cosmetics industry more effectively, the Mirror’s campaign to Ban the Cosmetic Cowboys aims to address health risks associated with cosmetic procedures. Recent incidents involving severe complications post-cosmetic procedures like tummy tucks and Brazilian butt lifts have prompted calls for stricter regulations to ensure consumer safety.
The committee also raised questions about procedures like injecting fillers into the penis for cosmetic purposes. Such practices, usually involving substances like hyaluronic acid, are under scrutiny for their potential risks and impacts on individuals’ health. The government is exploring new legislation to better oversee these procedures and prevent associated harms.
In response to safety concerns, an Amazon spokesperson emphasized the company’s commitment to customer safety by enforcing compliance with laws and regulations for all products on its platform. Amazon’s stringent seller verification process aims to safeguard consumers from potential fraud or abuse, with measures in place to swiftly address any identified risks or violations.
