“Gazza Italia ’90 Jersey Tops Retro Sales Surge”

Replicas of the iconic football jersey worn by Paul Gascoigne and the England squad during the Italia ’90 tournament have become the best-selling retro football top, surpassing the World Cup edition. The classic white design with navy accents and the Three Lions emblem gained fame when Gazza famously shed tears of frustration after receiving a yellow card in a crucial match against West Germany.

Despite England’s subsequent elimination from the competition on penalties, Gascoigne’s emotional outburst remains etched in the nation’s memory over 30 years later. Sports retail giant Sports Direct confirmed that the 1990 retro design, in collaboration with Score Draw, is now their top-selling vintage football shirt.

In anticipation of the FIFA World Cup 2026, Sports Direct is launching a campaign called ‘When Football Was Football,’ hosted by comedian Steve Bracknall, the creator of fictional football club Royal Oak FC. Market experts note a surge in demand for retro England and Scotland football jerseys, featuring timeless styles from past international tournaments, with the retro market doubling since the 2022 World Cup.

Popular retro shirts also include England’s Euro ’96 kit worn by figures like Gareth Southgate, Scotland’s 1996 jersey donned by stars such as Gary McAllister and Colin Hendry, and the 2004 England shirt worn by David Beckham and the team. Bracknall expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming World Cup, highlighting how the tournament unites people of all ages and backgrounds through shared passion for the game.

A spokesperson from Sports Direct emphasized that ‘When Football Was Football’ celebrates the traditions, personalities, and jerseys that have enamored fans with the sport, bridging nostalgia with a new generation. Recent reports revealed that England players have eagerly purchased up to 1,000 tickets for “family and friends” at each World Cup game, underscoring their excitement for the upcoming tournament. Chief Constable Mark Roberts disclosed these numbers while discussing policing strategies for the event.
