“Global ‘Pay to Move’ Incentives Spark Relocation Wave”

In response to the global trend of “pay to move” initiatives, various countries have introduced tailored programs to entice individuals to settle in areas facing declining populations and economic challenges.

Several attractive destinations around the world are now offering incentives for relocation in 2026, creating opportunities for those looking for a fresh start to consider their options.

These enticing relocation offers are aimed at boosting local populations and reviving economies, particularly in regions with aging workforces, as per reports. For instance, since 2018, the scenic village of Albinen in Switzerland has been enticing individuals with financial rewards to relocate there.

Under this scheme, adults can receive up to 25,000 Swiss francs (about £23,600 in 2026), while children may be eligible for up to 10,000 Swiss francs (around £9,400) to encourage a move to the rural village. Families can potentially receive a total of 70,000 Swiss francs (approximately £66,100) to help in purchasing property or settling down in the village.

Applicants must be under 45 years old, commit to residing in Albinen for at least a decade, own property worth 200,000 Swiss francs or more, and hold Swiss citizenship or a C Residence Permit to qualify.

In a separate initiative, the Chilean government is offering grants of up to £74,000 to tech-focused start-ups willing to operate from Chile, with additional benefits such as work visas, networking opportunities, and funding support.

Sardinia, an enchanting Italian island, is luring individuals to relocate by offering grants of up to €15,000 (roughly £13,000) per household for settling in smaller communities, with incentives for starting families as well.

In Ireland, the ‘Our Living Islands’ initiative aims to encourage young people to live and work on remote Irish islands by providing relocation funds for property restoration projects, subject to specific conditions.

Portugal’s Emprego Interior Mais program, launched in 2020, offers cash payments to support relocation to rural areas, with financial assistance for moving expenses and requirements such as permanent residency in Portugal and establishing ties to designated rural regions.

These relocation schemes present unique opportunities for individuals seeking a change of scenery and a chance to contribute to revitalizing communities in various parts of the world.
