“Deadly Landslide Strikes Java: 8 Dead, 80 Missing”

At least eight individuals have lost their lives, and over 80 individuals are unaccounted for following a devastating landslide that hit Java island in Indonesia. The incident occurred in the West Bandung district of West Java province after persistent heavy rainfall led to the overflowing of river banks on Saturday.

Tragically, the bodies of eight victims were discovered in Pasir Kuning, the area most severely impacted by the landslide, where numerous homes were engulfed by mud and debris. A search and rescue operation is currently in progress for the 82 missing residents, as confirmed by Abdul Muhari, a spokesperson for the national disaster management agency. Fortunately, 24 individuals were able to escape the calamity.

Images depicting the aftermath show a portion of the island submerged in thick mud while rescue teams are tirelessly working to locate the missing individuals amidst rocks, rubble, and fallen trees. Immediate emergency response teams were dispatched following the disaster, according to Teten Ali Mungku Engkun, the director of West Java’s disaster management office. Precautionary evacuations were carried out for residents residing near the affected zone due to the risk of additional landslides.

Engkun mentioned the challenges faced by search and rescue operations due to the unstable terrain and continuous heavy rainfall. Residents in landslide-prone areas are advised to remain vigilant for signs of shifting soil or unusual noises, signaling the need for immediate evacuation.
