Carlos Alcaraz made history by defeating Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final to become the youngest player ever to achieve a career Grand Slam in the Open era, surpassing Rafael Nadal’s record. Despite losing the first set 6-2 at Rod Laver Arena, the world No. 1 rallied to win the next three sets 6-2, 6-3, 7-5, clinching his first victory in Melbourne.
At 22 years old, Alcaraz has previously won each of the other three Grand Slam tournaments twice, but had faced setbacks in Australia. After being knocked out in the quarterfinals in the past two years, including a defeat by Djokovic last year, he reached his first final this year.
In a revengeful match lasting just over three hours, Alcaraz dethroned the 11-time champion, breaking an 88-year-old record set by Don Budge in 1938 of being the youngest to achieve a Grand Slam. Alcaraz achieved this milestone at 22 years and 272 days, surpassing Nadal’s record in the Open era.
Nadal, present at Rod Laver Arena, witnessed Alcaraz rewrite tennis history, claiming his seventh Grand Slam singles title and becoming the youngest player to reach that milestone, surpassing Bjorn Borg. This victory also positioned Alcaraz three titles ahead of his rival Jannik Sinner, who Djokovic defeated in the semi-finals.
Djokovic, at 38 years old, missed the opportunity to become the all-time leader in Grand Slam singles titles with 25, facing physical challenges after a strong start. Despite a resilient effort in the fourth set, he couldn’t force a decider in his 38th Grand Slam final.
Acknowledging Alcaraz’s achievement, Djokovic praised the young player’s historic performance and wished him success in his future career. Djokovic also paid tribute to Nadal, expressing his gratitude for the legendary player’s presence at the event.
The Australian Open final was a momentous occasion, with Alcaraz making a significant mark in tennis history and Djokovic and Nadal’s sportsmanship shining through amidst the competitive atmosphere.
