New York State has announced a state of emergency as a severe winter storm looms over the United States. Governor Kathy Hochul officially declared the emergency in anticipation of the upcoming massive storm during a press conference on Friday. Hochul assured that the state of New York is well-prepared and has an ample supply of salt to treat roads. Additionally, she granted permission for all state employees to work remotely on Monday.
With a low-pressure system in the Southwest region colliding with moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and frigid Arctic air from Canada, 14 states have now declared emergencies. The National Weather Service (NWS) has indicated that the storm, originating over the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains, will first impact southern and midwestern states on Friday before moving across the east coast by Saturday and extending as far north as Maine by Sunday.
The NWS has cautioned that the storm will bring heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain from the Southern Rockies to New England, covering regions from Texas through Washington DC, New York, and Boston. Approximately 160 million individuals across 30 states, nearly half of the country’s population, are expected to be affected by snow and ice, with some areas projected to receive over 12 inches of snow by the weekend’s end. States that have declared emergencies include Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
The winter storm is a blend of heavy snow, blowing snow, and potentially perilous wind chills, as stated by the NOAA’s National Severe Storms Laboratory. According to the NWS, the storm is predicted to result in significant ice accumulations, leading to extended power outages, substantial tree damage, and treacherous travel conditions. Post-storm, communities from the Southern Plains to the Northeast will face bitterly cold temperatures and hazardous wind chills, contributing to prolonged travel difficulties and infrastructure challenges.
In response to the impending severe weather, US President Donald Trump, a vocal skeptic of climate change, took to Truth Social to comment on the situation. Trump highlighted the expected record cold wave affecting 40 states and questioned the concept of global warming. Meteorologists attribute the current weather patterns to the Polar Vortex, a large area of low pressure and cold air encircling the poles, which is currently driving Arctic air across North America.
Scientific research suggests that Arctic warming can disrupt the polar vortex, potentially causing it to stretch or divide, leading to an increase in extreme winter weather conditions.
