Iran’s supreme leader has criticized Donald Trump for the harm he caused to the Iranian nation during recent anti-government demonstrations. Trump had previously threatened action against Iran if any protesters were harmed, but he later adopted a more conciliatory stance, claiming that executions did not proceed.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in his first post on his Persian-language social media account since mid-January, accused protesters of aligning with foreign terrorists and blamed the unrest on “American sedition.” He emphasized the need to combat both domestic and international elements involved in this sedition.
Khamenei also pointed fingers at individuals associated with Israel and the US for inflicting significant damage and causing casualties during the protests. Meanwhile, Trump had issued warnings to Iran, stating that he was prepared for action if necessary, urging the Iranian government to refrain from violence against demonstrators.
Despite considerations for military action, Trump opted not to strike Iran following advice from advisors who questioned the effectiveness of such a move. Concerns were raised about the potential destabilization of the region and the global economy. Trump expressed gratitude to Iran for not carrying out executions and acknowledged the peaceful atmosphere in Tehran.
The Human Rights Activists News Agency based in the US has reported a death toll of 3,090 from the recent unrest in Iran, marking one of the deadliest periods of protest in the country’s recent history. Despite the ongoing internet blackout, life in Tehran appears to be returning to normal, with no reports of further disturbances.
