Renowned martial arts actor Yuen Cheung-yan, known for his role in the comedy action film Kung Fu Hustle, has passed away at the age of 69. Throughout his career, Cheung-yan choreographed fight sequences for popular movies such as Charlie’s Angels and The Matrix series. Starting in the 1960s, he worked on numerous acclaimed films in Hong Kong before transitioning to Hollywood.
Among his notable works are the 1993 film Tai Chi Master featuring Michelle Yeoh, and appearances in the Charlie’s Angels movies from 2000 and 2003. He also performed stunts in The Matrix Reloaded. However, his most iconic role remains that of the beggar in Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Hustle.
Born into Hong Kong’s esteemed Yuen family, Cheung-yan followed in the footsteps of his father, Yuen Siu-tien, a renowned actor and martial artist who starred alongside Jackie Chan. His older brother, Yuen Woo-ping, is a respected martial arts choreographer and director in both Hong Kong and Hollywood, while another brother, Yuen Shun-yi, is also involved in martial arts, acting, and stunts. All siblings received martial arts training from their father at a young age.
Cheung-yan passed away on New Year’s Day at Hong Kong’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Lee Lik-chi, a fellow filmmaker and actor, announced the news on Weibo, expressing condolences and mentioning a funeral scheduled for February 1. The cause of Cheung-yan’s death has not been disclosed.
