“UK Leaders Slam Trump’s Greenland Tariffs as ‘Inappropriate'”

Keir Starmer criticized Donald Trump’s imposition of tariffs on countries opposing his attempt to acquire Greenland as “inappropriate” during a series of discussions today, including a conversation with the US President. The UK Prime Minister engaged in urgent talks with President Trump following concerns raised by NATO members, including the UK, about the potential negative impact of Trump’s tariff threats on relations.

Downing Street reported that the Prime Minister had conversations with several leaders, including the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, before speaking with President Trump. The Prime Minister reaffirmed his stance on Greenland during all these discussions, emphasizing the importance of security in the High North for NATO allies and condemning the application of tariffs on allies striving for NATO collective security.

President Trump recently announced plans to impose 10% tariffs on countries, including the UK, if they oppose his desired acquisition of Greenland. He also warned of increasing tariffs on NATO allies to 25% by June 1 if a Greenland purchase deal is not reached.

Keir Starmer and Cabinet ministers have strongly criticized Trump’s actions as “completely inappropriate.” In a joint statement, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom expressed solidarity with Denmark and Greenland. They emphasized their commitment to strengthening Arctic security as a shared transatlantic interest and denounced tariff threats as detrimental to transatlantic relations.

The UK’s Culture Secretary, Lisa Nandy, affirmed the UK’s unwavering position on Greenland despite Trump’s threats. She stressed that the future of Greenland should be determined by the Greenlandic and Danish people’s wishes. Nandy highlighted the importance of the UK-US relationship and clarified that the UK’s stance on Greenland is non-negotiable.

Several world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, have rejected Trump’s intimidation tactics and emphasized the need for cooperation rather than confrontation. Additionally, EU ambassadors have been called for emergency discussions to address the escalating situation.
